Appleby Supports Refugees

A group of Appleby residents came together during the anti-immigrant, racist rioting in September because they were outraged and shocked that this ignorance, hatred and violence could happen in the UK. They turned this into action in the community and got hold of PERN and CRAG’s Myth Buster – ‘Myths About Refugees, Asylum Seekers & Migrants in Cumbria’.

Sue McGuinness from Appleby said ‘We wanted to counteract all the mis-information flooding social media, our intention was to learn the facts and evidence highlighting the true situation of our brothers and sisters. This experience made us realise how ignorant we were about the plight of refugees, asylum seekers & migrants and left us wanting to know more.”

They made a public display, in The Cloisters, Appleby and talked to people on the streets in order to counteract all the mis-information flooding social media.

They formed the Appleby group of PERN in order to continue the journey of becoming more informed and to speak out on behalf of people seeking asylum in the UK. Watch this space.

What an inspiration Appleby folk are!
