Refugee Support

Receiving ‘Leave to Remain’ status means that individuals can feel more secure and psychologically safe. However, this also means that individuals face new challenges and opportunities. The basic needs such as housing and money become the new refugees’ responsibility to navigate. The UK has some strange ways and it is easy to get confused.

PERN’s Refugee Support scheme provides refugees with long-term person-centred support and guidance to navigate life, live and thrive in the UK. This includes support with:

  • Housing
  • Jobs and Careers
  • Study and Training
  • Healthy Living
  • Money Management
  • Improving Your English
  • Social Well-Being and Community

PERN’s Refugee Support Service run a drop-in session at Carlisle College Library (CA1 1HS) on Tuesdays (13:00-15:00) year round. This is the best way to begin to access support. There is no need to book – you can just turn up. If you have any questions before attending, please contact the Refugee Support Team.

PERN’s Refugee Support scheme is run by Gamal and Catherine (pictured above), with the support of a dedicated team of volunteers, some of whom have lived experience of the asylum system. Please do get in touch if you are interested in volunteering. We are particularly looking for mentors and job coaches who have HR experience – here is a flyer where you can find out more.

This service is for refugees who have come through the asylum route. This service is not for refugees who have come through the resettlement route, other visa schemes or work-sponsored visas.
