Volunteer opportunities

Joyful, nerdy geeks wanted to support asylum seekers in navigating Home Office procedures

Every asylum seeker must make a formal application to the Home Office for refugee status. Volunteers can give a helping hand to guide people through the process and help asylum seekers use the multi-language toolkit www.righttoremain.org.uk

We don’t give legal advice, but understanding the process and having good information is essential to a successful asylum claim.

Please get in touch at penrithandedenrefugeenetwork@gmail.com if you want to find out more. We’re a supportive group, training is available and your involvement can be in many ways from helping someone understand a letter through to getting accredited as a legal adviser.

Want to teach English?

As we have shared previously, asylum seekers are not permitted to attend statutory ESOL classes, and PERN has stepped in with volunteer-led English classes for the residents of the Carlisle hotel. We already run four classes and we’re now able to expand to a Tuesday morning as well.

We need one more teacher (willing to take a class of around 15 students) and two or three assistant teachers to complete the volunteer team. Please contact pernenglishforall@gmail.com if you think you can help out.
