PERN English is now in Wigton!
When PERN heard that people seeking asylum were now placed in Wigton, we alerted the local community and amazing community organisations and new volunteers came forward. In February PERN set up English classes in Wigton with all new students and new local teaching volunteers.
Learning English is at the heart of becoming independent and preparing for a new life in the UK. It isn’t easy! The classes have been going really well and people are becoming more confident at speaking English and learning new words and grammar. However, at the heart of this work is the welcome to Wigton and the belonging to the community that is offered to the new residents.
Mindia, from Georgia said – “I’ve been living in Wigton for the past 4 months. During this time, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful group of volunteers who support us in many ways. I am deeply grateful to my teacher who is incredibly helpful in improving my English — both grammar and everyday conversation. Many thanks as well to everyone involved in this amazing work. I wish you all good health and continued success!”
Nouradine, from Sudan said – ‘علخاولبعللتا نكنزتلفعق وخصوصا روعنواعلغلل (We all treasure it)’
And Pat said – ‘I am loving getting to know the guys at the men’s house and it is so satisfying to see them progress in their use and knowledge of English, especially when I am able to help them on a one to one basis at the classes in Wigton. I feel very privileged to be part of their journey.’
