Laptops funded by Fibrus
We are delighted to announce that PERN has received funding from Fibrus Broadband’s #CommunityFund in 2024.
This funding has allowed us to purchase four new laptops, a monitor and a bigger screen to be used by asylum seekers and refugees who we are supporting at our small PERN Legal and Info office in Carlisle. This means that they can access essential documents and complete important processes in regard to immigration, as well as being able to access things needed for setting up a successful life in the UK (for example websites for applying for a bank account or searching for a house to live in or a job).
These computers are available in a safe and supported environment where people can get advice from trained volunteers and staff, alongside self-learning.
Sarah Wilson, Director of PERN says:
“At times I myself find it hard to navigate systems in the UK, and I don’t think I would survive well in another country with different systems and culture and language. People fleeing war and persecution have no choice but to cope as best they can when English may be their second or third language.
While technology helps with translation needs, friends, volunteers and professionals are also needed in a safe space for the more complex things. Working on a tiny phone screen with translated documents and different scripts challenges everyone. Having the Fibrus funded computers and screens is invaluable. PERN Legal and Info services are in high demand. People used to come to us and say ‘can you help me with this form because I can’t do it on my phone’, and now we can offer them a laptop in a safe space. It helps people and saves valuable PERN time.’
Making your asylum application to the Home Office is the most important event for someone fleeing war and persecution. There is an excellent multi language tool kit called ‘Right to Remain.’ Everyone needs to read and study this to know how to make their application and now we have laptops and screens in our offices for people to use.”
Thanks Fibrus!
